High physical strain due to non-automated processes

Meiners Saaten is a family-owned seed supplier with a long-standing tradition and a commitment to "Quality from the start." Before the automation solution was implemented, the manual handling of heavy seed bags was part of the daily routine. The bags were manually removed from pallets and placed onto a conveyor belt, sometimes with the assistance of a crane with a suction device. This task involved significant physical effort, especially due to the high weight of the bags and the additional strain of the working environment, characterized by heat and dust. The associated health risks clearly highlight the urgent need for an ergonomically and technologically optimized solution.

Efficiency through Automation:
The New Depalletizing Solution at Meiners Saaten

This video showcases the automated sack depalletizing solution in action, with excerpts highlighting the operations at Meiners Saaten. It demonstrates how the technology streamlines the process, enhances efficiency, and reduces physical strain on employees, all while ensuring precise and reliable performance in their day-to-day operations.

Intelligent robotic solution for precise sack removal and placement

To sustainably reduce the physical strain on employees while simultaneously increasing process reliability, we have implemented an AI-powered system for the automated depalletizing of seed bags for Meiners Saaten.
An integrated Time-of-Flight (ToF) sensor captures the 3D point cloud of the loaded pallet and, in combination with a deep learning algorithm, enables the precise localization of the bags and the identification of suitable gripping points. The collected data is transmitted via a custom-developed PLC interface to a robotic system, which then precisely transfers the bags onto the conveyor belt. The overall solution ensures a secure, reproducible process and significantly relieves the staff.

Reliable object detection despite irregular pallet structures

The pallets with seed bags are packed chaotically. The bags have different packing patterns, sizes, and layers. Despite this, the visual AI is designed to reliably recognize the bags as such, transmit their positional coordinates to the robot, and move them to the correct position. With our Vision AI, we can locate objects in real-time on various pallet types, ensuring we can do the same even with the chaotically sorted pallets.

The successful collaboration with Meiners Saaten and G&M demonstrates that we can deliver reliable results even with chaotic pallets and varying packaging designs. Through seamless integration into existing robotic solutions with a tailored interface, we create an immediately deployable complete package.

Efficiency, precision, and relief through AI-based process automation

Before

Physical strain on employees
Inefficiency and slow processes
Irregularities and errors due to employee physical exhaustion
Limited traceability and lack of statistical tracking of depalletized bags, complicating process analysis and quality control
Scaling of the process is only difficultly possible

Result

Optimized process speed through fast and 100% accurate object detection by the visual AI
Complete automation of the process, ensuring scalability
No physical strain on employees in this process
300-380 bags per hour
98% precision in gripping the bags
Overview through user interface

We are thrilled that this solution was tailored specifically to our needs. We initially had concerns about how well a solution could work for our application, given the complexity of our case such as chaotic pallets. However, we have not regretted the investment for a single moment. The new system has also been very well received by our staff, as it has noticeably eased their workload.
